ISID and Okuma participate in Digital Meister Program
—Pursuing research and development to systemize metallic mold design and manufacturing skills entrusted by NEDO

Information Services International-Dentsu, Ltd. (ISID, head office: Nakano-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Jutaro Takinami) and Okuma Corporation (Okuma, head office: Oguchi-cho, Niwa-gun, Aichi; President: Junro Kashiwa) have jointly offered a proposal and successfully won their bid to pursue research and development on systemizing skills specific to the design and manufacturing of metallic molds for the Digital Meister Program. This program is organized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and is managed by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

More specifically, the Digital Meister Program is an initiative to help empower the manufacturing industry. It is the collaborative effort of industry, government, and academic institutions, objectively defining core skills and converting them into reproducible technologies by utilizing IT (Information Technology).

Both companies represent outstanding sources of experience and technical prowess: ISID has proven expertise in its large-scale, mission-critical systems construction knowledge and Okuma, as one of Japan's leading machine tool manufacturers, offers its IT Plaza production system, featuring their NC machine tools.

The two companies have established a strong working relationship. Previously ISID partnered with Okuma to rebuild its mainstay business system, integrated with the IT Plaza. In fact, the Digital Meister Program highlighted the combined strengths of each party's expertise as key to this partnership.

In this project, ISID and Okuma propose to consolidate and improve the position of Japanese manufacturing. Through research and development, it intends to provide a system for the extraction and application of "knowledge management," that is, advanced skills in the identification of problems and developing solutions in the context of onsite conditions.

Digital Meister Program
Manufacturing is the driving force behind Japan's international competitiveness. In order to take advantage of the IT revolution and strengthen manufacturing's competitive edge, an environment conducive to continual innovation needs to be established. It is important to create an "IT Social Asset"—a platform for the dissemination and interchange of skills, know-how, and knowledge by skilled engineers. Specifically, skills must be scientifically analyzed toward incorporating reproducible technologies while establishing innovative production systems combining manufacturing technologies and IT. In light of the ongoing progress of IT, the objective of the Digital Meister Program is to build alliances among industry, government, and academic institutions using IT to convert skills into model technologies and support the full realization of groundbreaking production systems.
